Does democracy even exist anymore?
Our governments tout the importance of keeping our democracy intact, how important the democratic process truly is to the “free” country we live in. We hear time and time again how we cannot allow certain view points or opinions to be expressed as it is a threat to democracy. Our leaders seem to believe they understand the people of their country, what the citizens want or hearing “their messages loud and clear”. They say they are the best option we have for defending our rights and freedoms, challenges to the nation and upholding our country’s values. But are they?
Chrystia Freeland and Justin Trudeau spoke about how they hear Canadians when the Freedom Convoy took place in January - February 2021. They said it was a threat to the nation, the rights and freedoms of innocent citizens living in Ottawa and how the Convoy was occupying our capital and holding our borders hostage; an excuse they conveniently made up to enact the Emergencies Act, which allowed them to freeze personal and business accounts to anyone who donated or partook in supporting the Convoy. However, the real threat to our democracy was when parliament voted to enact the Emergencies Act. Robbing Canadians of their rights and freedoms to peacefully protest against their corrupt and over reaching government “mandates” forcing Canadian citizens to be vaccinated with a potentially lethal injection or loose their jobs/careers. Canadians simply wanted their freedoms and lives back.
When the inquiry into the use of the Emergencies Act was conducted, there was a plethora of evidence that showed the protest was peaceful; the organizers were working with Police, there was no violence or damage done to buildings and no threats of violence to members of parliament. The real problem that was highlighted is how inept Justin Trudeau’s government is and how little respect he has for Canadian citizens and their beliefs in bodily autonomy, the freedom of not being forced to wear masks and having the ability to decide what is best for their families. This is an example of what a real threat to democracy is; denying citizens the right to voice their opinions, being heard and having their Charter of Rights and Freedoms upheld.
This isn’t the first real threat to democracy that has come from Justin Trudeau and his government. The amount of endless scandals over the past 7 years while Trudeau has been Prime minister is astounding. A few of Trudeau’s scandals include: WE Charity, SNC-Lavalin, Freeland wanting to purchase 2B worth of shares in a company that doesn’t exist etc. In particular, the SNC-Lavalin scandal, where he tried to pressure Jody Wilson-Raybould into stopping a criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin is a clear indicator that the current government has no respect for the Canadian values or allowing the judicial system to work properly and effectively without political interference.
In a more recent and apparent disregard for Canadian democracy, Trudeau has ignored CSIS reports indicating that China had influenced the 2021 Federal election. On Friday February 17, 2023 The Globe and Mail released a bomb shell article “CSIS documents reveal Chinese strategy to influence Canada’s 2021 election”. This article discusses a secret CSIS report that was shared with The Globe and Mail which indicated China had manipulated Canada’s 2021 election to ensure Trudeau was given a minority government. China used sophisticated strategies by leveraging politically active Chinese communities and associations within the Canadian society. Some of the strategies were conducted by instructing Chinese diplomats and Chinese language media to promote disinformation about specific MP’s who were too critical of China. They propagandized that the MP’s would implement policies which would ban Chinese students from universities or educational programs. The GTA and Vancouver were the two areas in which the CPP targeted their efforts as they have the highest Chinese immigrant communities. However, how do we know they are the only communities targeted?
The CSIS report further explains how the Chinese community was encouraged to donate to political candidates favoured by the CPP. In December 2021, the candidates then returned the difference between the original donation and the tax credit back to the donors. This was done quietly and illegally behind the backs of all Canadians.
Trudeau openly admits he was aware of the CSIS report indicating foreign interference and that it did not change the outcomes of the 2021 elections. He ensures Canadians that “Canada has some of the best and most robust elections in the world, and all Canadians can have total confidence that the outcomes of the 2019 and 2021 elections were determined by Canadians, and Canadians alone..” Just how confident and assured he is that the interference had no role to play in the outcome when the report indicated that the loss of certain MPs proved “their strategy and tactics were good, and contributed to achieving their goals...”.
Is Trudeau saying there is no threat to our democracy regardless of the fact that the CSIS report clearly indicates there is? Is he turning another blind eye because it favoured him in the last election? How can Canadians feel confident in our democracy when there is blaring evidence that our last election was meddled with by foreign governments? I don’t think Trudeau understands the meaning of democracy, or what the true values held by Canadians are. Surely if he did, we wouldn’t have such atrocities such as the Emergencies Act being used on peaceful protesters or allowing foreign governments influence a large section of our immigrant population.
So I ask, should we accept the results of this past election or should we demand a new election to be held immediately?
